Edward Jenner (17 May 1749 – 26 January 1823) was an Englishphysician known for creating the vaccine for smallpox.

The practice of vaccination was popularized by Jenner, and since then has been used to prevent several diseases.
Jenner's work saved many lives. In his time, smallpox killed around 10% of the British population, with the number as high as 20% in towns and cities where infection spread more easily.
In 2002, Jenner was named in the BBC's list of the 100 Greatest Britons.
Early life
Edward Jenner was born on 17 May 1749 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England as the eighth of nine children. His father, the Reverend Stephen Jenner, was the vicar of Berkeley, so Jenner received a strong basic education.
Education and training
When he was young, he went to school in Wotton-under-Edge at Katherine Lady Berkeley's School and in Cirencester.
